Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:
to look after orphans and widows in their distress and
to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
James 1:27 New International Version (NIV)
The essence of Christianity is belief in Jesus as our personal saviour-mediator, who has atoned for our personal sin. He has served justice and grace and thereby redeemed us from spiritual death and hence God is willing to dwell in us. Jesus empowers us to love and has granted us a life in the presence of God right now as well as in the hereafter.
Our bodily resurrection and redemption from physical death is a Christian core belief, but ultimately it is a fringe benefit. If it would prove to be a myth it should still not destroy our faith or salvation.
We are called to manifest Immanuel - God with us and in us and through us. That goes way beyond doing things for God. The world needs to see God at work. What we can do in the natural is good, but if we can do it alone then ultimately it is not a witness for God and his divine power and nature. Its just a witness of humanism, the goodness of human nature.
